James Heating & A/C, Inc offers furnace service appointments that help keep your furnace in tip-top shape and operating efficiently for you all winter long. Whether that’s finding small issues before they become big problems, identifying potential safety hazards or making sure you’re maintaining your manufacturer’s warranty, our experts have you covered. Our trained technicians complete furnace service with care, inspecting a number of components in and around your furnace. In fact, our multi-point inspection can help make sure your system runs smoothly throughout the winter.
For starters, once a year, vacuum out the area around the furnace’s blower. If possible, also slide out the fan unit, clean each fan blade with a toothbrush, and then vacuum with a brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner. While you’re at it, look for oil ports on the motor, normally located near the motor shaft. If the motor has these, apply two to three drops of non-detergent motor oil into each port (you may have to remove a cover plate to do this). Though most contemporary motors don’t require lubrication, do lubricate motors with oil ports once a year. For more about maintenance, see Maintenance Checklist for Central Heating Systems.

I met the owner while looking at a new house, he was servicing the furnace. I asked for a card and explained that I live in a townhome, he said not a problem. Well I called a day or so late to schedule an appointment. That went smooth due to the season the schedule was 3-4 weeks out. I understand and wait patiently. Week the day before the scheduled service i got a reminder call, those are helpful. Well the gal on the phone calls back a few minutes later she called back and came up with a few excuses on why they can no longer come look at my furnace. They seemed pretty hollow to me and she took a fairly snippy attitude with me as well. Due to hire this went down and the fact that it took a month for them to say no can do, I will never ever pay a positive wire forward towards this company!

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. My furnace thermostat stopped working, and when I called Dehlia answered the phone and set up an appointment. They charged less for a diagnostic call than larger companies. They are actively licensed, bonded and insured. Verne arrived 2 days later, explained what was broken in my 17 year old furnace and gave me an estimate and time of replacement for a new furnace. Dehlia confirmed via email and phone, and Don and Zack showed up as promised on time a week later and replaced my Bryant 90i furnace with a new Rheem 96% efficient 2 stage Variable speed 85,000btu gas furnace Model #R96VA0852521 and provided me with the paperwork warranty and removed the old one. Cost was $5,394.90 including tax. I gave up on trying to get 2 more estimates because every furnace company wants $125 to $200 to come out to do a diagnostic and this company wanted $75 to come out to look at it although admittedly they just took a look at it and said it was broken and repair would be $2 to $3k and should just get a new  one (this fee was waived when I agreed to buy a new furnace from them). They also said it was possible I could find cheaper installation elsewhere, but I was freezing in December and I just wanted heat and other companies were 2 to 3 weeks out for an appointment.  They were pleasant to chat with as they worked and Don updated a convoluted furnace exhaust piping system. They accept cash and check after a job is finished with no deposit up front and are clear that 3% is added if you pay via credit card.  Overall I am happy with my new furnace although I sure wish I could've replaced it myself to save some money.
If those steps don't work, call a heating contractor. Despite the improved efficiency of most new furnaces, it's generally more cost-effective to repair a furnace than to replace it. However, if a key component such as the heat exchanger or control module fails, you're probably better off replacing the furnace, especially if the unit is more than about 15 years old. Furnaces typically last an average of 15 to 18 years.

Fitting a furnace with an electrostatic filter, which uses an electrical charge to help trap particles, or a high-efficiency particulate-arresting (HEPA) filter can reduce the amount of dust blown through the heating system. That might help people with asthma or other chronic lung diseases, but there's little evidence that other people need such filtration.

Tyler M came to my house today to clean the furnace fan and motor, and to check the furnace efficiency. He arrived on time, did a great job on the furnace. The fan was really dirty and did more work than was requested as a courtesy - and still charged the quoted price. Tyler was friendly, courteous, very knowledgeable, and was very efficient in completing the work. I would definitely recommend Tyler M and Swan plumbing and Heating for excellent work at a very reasonable price.
