If you have an older furnace with a standing pilot light, it’s possible that the pilot light has been extinguished. First, confirm that the light is out. Then, turn the gas valve to the off position and wait five minutes. If there is a reset button on your furnace, turn the valve to the pilot position and hold a flame to the dedicated pilot opening while pushing the button for about 30 seconds. (If the pilot doesn’t light on the first attempt, wait a few minutes and repeat the procedure, this time depressing the reset button for 45-60 seconds.) Once the pilot is lit, turn the gas valve back to the on position. If the pilot light won’t stay lit, it’s possible that there is an issue with the thermocouple or ignition system. Call an HVAC professional for assistance.

Efficient operation is a function of regular heating system maintenance. When a heating system malfunctions, any one of its three components – heat/cold source, distribution system, or the thermostat – can be causing the problem. Our technicians can easily detect an impending issue before you have to replace a heating unit or spend a lot of money on parts and labor.

Partly to avoid that possibility, the furnaces in most homes are larger than necessary. Initial cost is only one of the drawbacks of that strategy. A furnace that's too large will cycle on and off more frequently. That puts more wear on its components, wastes energy, and might cause the temperature to vary uncomfortably. Also, a larger replacement furnace might require larger ducts. Without the right size ducts, airflow can be noisy.
In this video I show you a few things to look for to fix your furnace. It's expensive to call a repair man and most of the time is not needed. I am not an expert, just someone trying to share my experience with you to save some money. Always turn your power to your furnace off before tampering with things. This would be a good video to start with because I try to show a general idea of how a furnace works. When all else fails, you have to call an expert, but first try the steps in this video.

Tyler M came to my house today to clean the furnace fan and motor, and to check the furnace efficiency. He arrived on time, did a great job on the furnace. The fan was really dirty and did more work than was requested as a courtesy - and still charged the quoted price. Tyler was friendly, courteous, very knowledgeable, and was very efficient in completing the work. I would definitely recommend Tyler M and Swan plumbing and Heating for excellent work at a very reasonable price.
My furnace thermostat stopped working, and when I called Dehlia answered the phone and set up an appointment. They charged less for a diagnostic call than larger companies. They are actively licensed, bonded and insured. Verne arrived 2 days later, explained what was broken in my 17 year old furnace and gave me an estimate and time of replacement for a new furnace. Dehlia confirmed via email and phone, and Don and Zack showed up as promised on time a week later and replaced my Bryant 90i furnace with a new Rheem 96% efficient 2 stage Variable speed 85,000btu gas furnace Model #R96VA0852521 and provided me with the paperwork warranty and removed the old one. Cost was $5,394.90 including tax. I gave up on trying to get 2 more estimates because every furnace company wants $125 to $200 to come out to do a diagnostic and this company wanted $75 to come out to look at it although admittedly they just took a look at it and said it was broken and repair would be $2 to $3k and should just get a new one (this fee was waived when I agreed to buy a new furnace from them). They also said it was possible I could find cheaper installation elsewhere, but I was freezing in December and I just wanted heat and other companies were 2 to 3 weeks out for an appointment. They were pleasant to chat with as they worked and Don updated a convoluted furnace exhaust piping system. They accept cash and check after a job is finished with no deposit up front and are clear that 3% is added if you pay via credit card. Overall I am happy with my new furnace although I sure wish I could've replaced it myself to save some money.
Start with your utility company; they can help a great deal. Comparing previous bills isn't always a good measure, as the weather is never exactly the same month to month. Instead, if you take your energy bill and divide it by the square footage of livable space in your home, don't count areas like unfinished garages or basements -- you can calculate how much you are spending to heat or cool each square foot of your home. Your energy provider can tell you what the average cost per square foot is in your region for that same period of time so you can compare apples to apples.
To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

Gas furnaces and heaters have control shutoffs to prevent gas leaks, but they are not fail-safe. If you smell gas in your house, do not turn any lights on or off, and do not try to shut off the gas leading to the furnace. Get out of the house, leaving the door open, and immediately call the gas company or the fire department to report a leak. Do not re-enter your home.

Responding swiftly to your call, one of our technicians will provide you with a handwritten, fair and competitive estimate that details how exactly your system will be repaired. High-efficiency condensing furnaces (90% AFUE and above) are a bit more complex than conventional furnaces. The main differences between a conventional and condensing furnace is the heat exchanger technology used to extract heat from the combustion process and the method used to exhaust the combustion gases. In these ways, the furnaces are very different. The condensing furnace does not have a significantly more efficient combustion process than does a conventional furnace; both use gas burners with electronic ignition. The difference lies in that the condensing furnace has a more efficient heat extraction process after combustion.
