If you pull out your home’s air filter, hold it up to a light. If you can’t see light coming through it, it’s most likely been a while since your last heating service, and likely time to get a new one. If it’s a simple disposable air filter, just replace it with a like-size new one. It’s also a good idea to write down the date you installed the new filter, so you know how old it is next time it needs to be replaced. Check the filter packaging to see how long the new air filter is supposed to be used.

The quality of your heating installation can greatly impact the quality of your overall heating experience. If your system is not carefully selected, sized and installed, there is really just no way that you can hope for it to operate at peak performance and efficiency levels. Never settle for a subpar heating installation when our Seattle heating installation technicians are available to do the job right.

Any forced air system in your home - whether it is powered through electric or gas-generated energy - requires a blower motor. This component consists of an electric motor and fan, and is responsible for pushing air evenly through the furnace. As hvac.com points out, you can easily identify the blower motor in your furnace as the part that looks similar to a hamster wheel at the bottom of the unit. If it stops working, the air needed to heat your home will no longer be pushed through the furnace to be heated and distributed evenly. In that case, you need to inquire about potential repairs. Blower motor repair typically costs between $150 for a simple fix, and $450 for complete replacement and installation of the part. Where you land on that range depends on the exact damage.

Heat pumps that wring heat from outdoor air (and reverse the process in summer to act as an air conditioner) are inexpensive to install as an alternative to a cooling-only air-conditioning system. That makes them the preferred way to heat in the South and Southwest, where winters are typically short and mild. Heat pumps that wring heat from the ground are much more expensive to install, but they are suitable for cold climates because they can maintain their operating efficiency. Other inexpensive electric-heat options include strip heaters, which are installed in the ductwork of central air conditioning, and permanently installed baseboard units in each room. But before you consider any type of electric central heating in colder regions, keep in mind that electricity rates are much higher than those for natural gas and are likely to remain that way for the foreseeable future. You can get rate information for various fuels from local utilities and suppliers.

I'd had them come out before and called because my thermostat wasn't getting power. They said they don't service townhomes. I said that must be a new policy because they've been out before and she said they've had it for awhile. I tried to ask why they don't service townhomes and she said they don't service attached homes or commercial properties. I said that my home isn't commercial and it doesn't really answer my question, but I guess I'll go elsewhere. I couldn't find this policy on their website and I can't really understand why a townhome furnace would be different than an unattached home. When they came out before I seem to remember they did a good job, so it's too bad they have odd policies now.

The motor belt should be firm, giving no more than ½ inch when pressed. It should also be free of cracks and damage. To remove the belt, you will need a wrench and a replacement belt. Loosen, do not remove, the motor bolts. You only need them loose enough to move the motor and slacken the belt. Remove the belt and inspect it, replacing it with a new one if necessary. Belt: $4.00 to $6.00.

If your thermostat has a small lever that moves along a calibrated scale that indicates “longer” (not the heat temperature lever), you can try adjusting this—the heat anticipator. Just set it one calibration mark closer to the “longer” setting if the furnace goes off and on too frequently or one mark away if the furnace allows room temperature to rise too high or drop too low before going on or off. It may take several hours for the thermostat to stabilize at this setting, so wait a while and then adjust it again if necessary.
